We offer core courses designed to give students a strong foundation in the fundamental principles of pharmacology and physiology, including how drugs impact physiological systems.  Students choose an area of research, and mentor, based on their interests and professional goals.  Students can choose from a wide and diverse array of elective courses to tailor their education to their personal research interests.

Objectives of the Ph.D. Program:

  • Provide students with in-depth training in specific areas of biomedical sciences, with emphasis on hypothesis-driven, problem-solving research.

  • Train students for careers in university settings, industrial research & development, and government.

  • Produce graduates able to work independently, to develop experiments designed to solve biomedical problems, and to evaluate and analyze the outcomes of the experiments.

Additional research opportunities include:

  • Collaborations with faculty in various IBMS disciplines.

  • Translational research interacting with our Schools of Dentistry, Health Professions, Medicine, and Nursing.

  • Collaborative interactions with scientists at the Texas Biomedical Research Institute, University of Texas San Antonio (UTSA), Hospitals, and San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC), and many other organizations.
