Pediatric Dentistry externships are limited to a one-week rotation for dental students who are enrolled in another dental school in the U.S. This externship is a working externship and you will be providing care to patients. Types of procedures will be left to the supervising faculty.
The pediatric dental externships are primarily intended for dental students who are interested in applying to our residency program.
Externs are scheduled with the pediatric residents at two clinical sites. One site is at the dental school (Center for Oral Health Care and Research) and the second is at an outreach clinic location (Ricardo Salinas Clinic).
The Íø±¬³Ô¹Ï Pediatric Externship provides dental students from other dental schools an opportunity to:
- Develop a more complete understanding of Pediatric Dentistry
- Observe the variety of services provided in the pediatric program, including collaboration with other departments
- Acquire experience with outreach community clinics

- A letter of recommendation from a pediatric dental faculty at your school

Externship Schedules
The participation of the externship takes place in the summer. There will be at times other dental students from other schools or our own school completing summer selectives. This is an opportunity to network with other dental students from our school.
- The best time to participate in the summer externships is in the summer following the junior year of dental school .
- Applications are accepted January 15 to March 31 each year (published on the University’s website)
- The summer externship will be one week:
- June 10 through June 14
- June 17 through June 21
- June 24 through June 28
- July 1 through July 5
We are not able to provide malpractice insurance for externs. If accepted, you must show proof of malpractice insurance prior to your arrival for the externship. The request to fill an externship position, once accepted, represents a serious commitment. If an applicant withdraws without sufficient notice to the Íø±¬³Ô¹Ï Program Director, he or she is essentially robbing other applicants of an externship opportunity.
