Dental X-ray

X-rays are a necessary tool to help diagnose oral problems, including tooth decay, impacted teeth and other dental conditions. X-rays are preventative care, which helps the dentist or oral surgeon create a plan to manage your condition.

There are several types of dental X-rays:

  • Bitewing: This common X-ray shows the upper and lower teeth. It is commonly used in dental practices.
  • Cone beam CT imaging: Shows a three-dimensional view of your mouth. This can help the dentist with planning for implants, find tumors or determine if there are bone structure problems.
  • Occlusial: Shows the floor of your mouth. It is helpful to find teeth that have not yet erupted or are impacted.
  • Panoramic: Shows the teeth, jaws, joints, nasal and sinus areas. Often used for orthodontic evaluations.
  • Periapical: Shows the tooth from crown to bone.
