Course Description

This online enduring material presentation addresses EMTALA (Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act) what is required for Medicare participating hospitals with emergency room departments.
This presentation addresses provisions and services hospitals must offer under the federal law, with ethical and legal ramifications when EMTALA is not followed. Various citation facts are presented through ethical and legal issues discussed through interesting incidents and case presentations. This presentation offers an ethics credit toward licensure.
 

Target Audience

This activity is designed to meet the educational goals of general medical staff and other healthcare professionals working, referring and associated with hospital emergency rooms.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the scope of care, according to law that applies to EMTALA and defined by CMS
  • Define 3 main provisions of care based on the hospitals legal obligation to treat
  • Discuss various EMTALA cases, the transfer requirements, penalties and violation charges to hospitals and physicians
  • Discuss the AMA Code of Medical Ethics, the practice of medicine and the Code of Ethics for Emergency Room Physicians
