School of Health Professions Scholarships

These scholarships were established through the generosity of donors, alumni and friends of Թ.

Need-based scholarships

Recipients are chosen from those students who have applied for and received grant assistance from the Office of Veteran’s Services and Financial Aid.

Baptist Health Foundation of San Antonio: Scholarships provided by the Baptist Health Foundation of San Antonio enable the Foundation to fulfill its mission of improving the health of the community by fostering and funding clinical, educational, spiritual and scientific initiatives while honoring God and its Baptist heritage. Scholarships help to underwrite the tuition and fees of full-time students and are awarded to students whose primary residence is in the eight-county service area and whose intent, following graduation, is to remain and seek employment in the Foundation’s eight-county service area: Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Guadalupe, Kendall, Medina and Wilson.

Congressman Henry Bonilla Health Professions Scholarship: Scholarship support to students in good standing from the Texas 23rd Congressional District, from any classification and school within Թ. Scholarship is non-renewable and should be awarded to a different student each year.

Clinical Laboratory Sciences Scholarship Endowment: The Clinical Laboratory Sciences Endowed Scholarship was established by Dr. Peter E. Ramirez in 2002 to support outstanding students in the Clinical Laboratory Sciences program to achieve their career goals. Contributions to the fund were made by alumni, Թ faculty and administrators, and physicians to address the shortage of clinical laboratory scientists nationwide. It is a rigorous course of study and the Թ Clinical Laboratory Sciences program is the only one in San Antonio.

Council for Excellence in Women’s Health Scholarship: Scholarship support for students interested in women’s health. Criteria are financial need and minimum GPA of 3.0. A one-page written essay is required.

Paul Ellsworth Endowed Scholarship in Occupational Therapy: The Paul Ellsworth Endowed Scholarship in Occupational Therapy was created through the generosity of friends, colleagues and family in honor of Paul Ellsworth – educator, author, colleague and esteemed member of the Occupational Therapy faculty.

Greehey Scholars in Children’s Health: Established in 2007, and a shared scholarship between the School of Nursing and the School of Health Professions, Greehey Endowed Scholarships support students who have a special interest in children's health sciences, children's cancer, or other complex diseases of childhood. Greehey scholars will help address the severe shortage of nurses, especially nurse practitioners, and allied health professionals, such as respiratory therapists, physical therapists, hearing specialists and physician assistants. These scholars will also fill a critical need to better meet the urgent health care needs of families, especially those with children who have cancer or other chronic illnesses.

David P. Green Family Scholarship Endowment: Established in 1999, the David P. Green Family Scholarship Endowment provides need-based scholarships to students pursuing health professions at Թ, with particular emphasis on students who work part-time to help finance their education.

Matt Karns Endowed Memorial Scholarship in Physical Therapy: Mr. Matt Karns was a physical therapist in San Antonio, who was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident in 2007. In his memory, friends and family, as well as faculty of the Թ Department of Physical Therapy, created the Matt Karns Endowed Memorial Scholarship in Physical Therapy in his memory. Mr. Karns was very active in teaching physical therapy students, both in the classroom and the clinical setting and was involved in fundraising for the benefit of the San Antonio community.

Dr. Albert C. King Health Professions Endowed Scholarship: Support scholarship(s) for students in good standing who may be of any classification and from any of the schools within the Թ.

Laredo Rotary Club Scholarship Endowment: Provide scholarships to students enrolling in programs offered at Regional Campus with preference given to students who have graduated from Webb County high schools.

The Joe R. and Teresa L. Long Scholarship Research and Teaching Fund: In the winter of 2007 Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long generously established an endowed scholarship that will benefit Medical, Nursing, M.D./Ph.D. and Physician Assistant Students.

As a former teacher, Dr. Teresa Long has experienced first-hand that education is at the very heart of a society’s success. Entering teaching at a time when Caucasian and Mexican-American children were being taught together for the first time, her experience and hard work attracted the attention of state and federal government, leading her to serve in the U.S. Office of Education on Migrant Education and the Head Start Program, implementing education policies nationwide.

Beginning his career in United States Army, Mr. Joe Long served in the Korean War earning the rank of First Lieutenant. After being honorably discharged, Mr. Long took his leadership skills to the Office of the Attorney General and eventually into the banking industry. As the Founder and Executive of First State and Թ National Banks, Mr. Long built an empire of customer-service driven banks which not only survived the recession of the 1980’s, but flourished. In 1998, Mr. Long sold his banks to Norwest Corporation.

Together, Dr. and Mr. Long, bring their passion and talents to philanthropy. Dr. Teresa Lozano Long and Joe Long are among South Texas’ most admired civic leaders. Through the Long Foundation and their unwavering commitment to the arts, higher education, and medical advancement, they have enriched the social well-being of South Texas and have endowed generations to come with a brighter, more prosperous future.

The National Council of Jewish Women Ethel Weiner Boom/Ann Gorsch Endowed Scholarship Fund: Support scholarships to assist with the educational cost of the School of Health Professions’ Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy programs and School of Nursing students who demonstrate financial need. Recipients must be attending Թ a minimum of half-time during the semester in which they receive a scholarship. The number and amount of scholarships will be based on the amount of funds available for distribution from the endowment.

Presidential Scholarship Endowment: Funds distributed shall be used to support scholarships for at least one new student every year. Recipients will be known as Presidential Scholars and will be chosen yearly on a rotating basis from the following individual schools in the order that the schools were established: Long School of Medicine, School of Nursing, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Dental School, and School of Health Professions.

Retired Faculty and Administrators Endowed Scholarship: Student scholarships based exclusively on financial need. Available on rotating basis in the order that the Թ schools were established.

San Antonio Livestock Exposition (Sale) Scholarships: The San Antonio Livestock Exposition, Inc. (S.A.L.E.) continues to fulfill its mission as “a volunteer organization that emphasizes agriculture and education to develop the youth of Texas.” Through the annual San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo and with the support of more than 5,500 volunteers, S.A.L.E. commits funding to education in the form of scholarships, grants, endowments, auction, a calf scramble program and show premiums paid to youth. Scholarships are limited to students demonstrating the intent to practice in rural communities and/or small towns in central and south Texas.

David C. Shelledy Endowed Scholarship in Respiratory Care: Dr. David Shelledy, who served as chair of the Department of Respiratory Care for more than 10 years, is also past president of the American Association of Respiratory Care (AARC). This scholarship was created to honor his contributions toward helping create a leading program in Respiratory Care at the Թ.

South Texas Rising Academic Stars Scholarships: Scholarship support for students who are U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents with a permanent resident card or passport stamped I-551.

Donald C. Stephenson Endowed Memorial Scholarship in Respiratory Care: The Donald C. Stephenson Endowed Memorial Scholarship in Respiratory Care was created in 2007 for the support of students in the Respiratory Care program within the School of Health Professions. Donald C. “Sonny” Stephenson was an industrial electrician with his own business in Carrizo Springs, Texas. He was a gifted and agile athlete who loved to box until he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1995 and lost his battle with it in 2002. The endowed scholarship, created by his family and friends, honors his courage and memory.

Sjoerd Steunebrink Scholarship Endowment: Provide scholarships for students based on proven academic ability and financial need. Additional request is to share Dr. Steunebrink biography with scholar recipients.

Greg Treibs Memorial Scholarship: Provide scholarship support to qualifying students with first preference to students from Gillespie County, second preference to students from A&M, and third preference to students enrolled at any of the schools at the Health Science Center.

UTHSCSA Endowed Student Scholarship in honor of Kenneth Compton, Ximenes, Barrie Hodgson, H. Moreno, Sara Moore, International Alliance, Fiesta de Tejas, Philomathic Student Club, and Greek Charities: Support university-wide student scholarships, and can but is not limited to providing matching scholarship funds based on recommendations from the dean or designee for each school to the Office of Student Financial Aid. Management and disbursement of endowment distributions shall reside with the Office of Student Financial Aid in consultation with the school deans or designees.

UTHSCSA Physical Therapy Alumni Association Endowment: The Physical Therapy Alumni Association Endowment was established through the generosity of alumni from the Թ Physical Therapy program. Alumni members, realizing that incoming and current physical therapy student funds are needed during school, support this endowment to allow students the opportunity to focus on their studies.

David L. Vines Endowment for Clinical Excellence in Respiratory Care: The David L. Vines Endowment for Clinical Excellence in Respiratory Care was established in 2009 for the benefit of the Department of Respiratory Care in the School of Health Professions. David Vines, M.H.S., RRT, was the Interim Chair of the Department of Respiratory Care and Director of UT Allied Health Therapeutics, a rehabilitation therapy clinic at the School of Health Professions. Dr. Vines was also instrumental in creating a new international respiratory care affiliation with Chang Gung University in Taiwan, which promoted faculty and staff members from both universities to work together in clinical training and research.

Merit-based scholarships

Barnett Endowed Scholarship: Scholarship was established in honor of Duane Barnett, M.D., father of Julie Barnett, PT, D.P.T., M.T.C. for students enrolled in the Department of Physical Therapy. Dr. Duane Barnett, retired general surgeon, has committed his life to medicine through the compassionate care he has delivered to his patients. Because of his love of medicine and strong belief in education, Dr. Barnett continues to be a role model to future health professionals by volunteering his time to the Department of Physical Therapy.

Dr. Karin Barnes Leadership Endowment: The Dr. Karin Barnes Leadership Endowment was established in April 2017 in honor of Dr. Karin Barnes, Ph.D., OTR, and former Chair of the Department of Occupational Therapy. The Dr. Karin Barnes Leadership Endowment fund supports students in the Occupational Therapy program in the School of Health Professions with a special interest in leadership activity on a city, state and national level. Dr. Barnes became a founding member of the Occupational Therapy education program in 1981.  Her 35 years of service means she taught and mentored every graduate of the program. In addition to her commitment to teaching, she has been an unwavering leader and champion of the department. In the ten years she served as the Chair of the department, the Occupational Therapy program grew in national prominence and she was awarded a $1.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to support the development of OT students who are committed to serving children with disabilities. 

Presidential Ambassador Scholarships: Scholarship awards for students selected by their school’s dean as the best candidate to serve as an ambassador for their school and the Թ.

The Sandy Endowed Scholarship: The Sandy Endowed Scholarship in Respiratory Care was established in October 2014 in loving memory of Sandy Cudd. The Ralph C. Wilson Foundation funded this scholarship to benefit a student in the Department of Respiratory Care. The Wilson's are passionate in their support of caregivers who help those in need, and loved ones of those who are ill. This scholarship honors Sandy's fortitude as well as the great care she received by Respiratory Therapists.

Award scholarships

Awards are determined by the academic department or by selected committees.

Phyllis & Neil Bowie Student Թ Service Award: Academic support of students through awards and recognitions. The recipient must demonstrate community service through volunteer activities in San Antonio. Jr/Sr with an average or better GPA. This is a competitive Award with the recipient selected by the Health Science Center Awards Committee. Participants will prepare a written description - 300-word maximum essay of their community service activities. The awardee will receive a certificate and available funds will be presented annually.
