Faculty Bios

Lance Villers, PhD, LP
Associate Professor & Chair
Department of Emergency Health Sciences

Dr. Villers graduated with a Ph.D. in Educational Administration and Human Resource Development, specializing in Adult Teaching and Learning from Texas A&M University. He has been involved in emergency medical services as a paramedic, educator, and national speaker for over 30 years. Dr. Villers was the Texas EMS Instructor of the Year in 2002, a member of the University of Texas Academy of Master Teachers, a Distinguished Teaching Professor, and developed the first online Bachelor of Science program for paramedics. He has directed EMS educational programs for the US Army Special Operations Command, US Army 68W, F2 and F3 Paramedic program, San Antonio Fire Department, and numerous rural and urban fire and EMS departments.

 

David Wampler, PhD, LP, FAEMS 
Professor, Director of Clinical Research

Professor Wampler has been a paramedic for over 30 years. He currently serves as a Civilian Training Officer for the Office of the EMS Medical Director for the San Antonio Fire Department and as the Director of Clinical Research in the Department of Emergency Health Sciences. He earned a BS in Biochemistry from Schreiner University in Kerrville TX, and a PhD in Biochemistry from Utah State University. His goal is to foster a nurturing research environment that will bring science to EMS and bring EMS to science.

 

Mark Dieterle, MBA, NRP, LP
Assistant Professor/Clinical – Department of Emergency Health Sciences
Chief of Staff- Office of the Medical Director for San Antonio Fire Department

 

Mr. Dieterle has been an educator in EMS for the last 10 years and has trained most of the paramedics and EMTs with the San Antonio Fire Department. Prior to joining EMS he was involved in multiple successful business ventures but realized his true passion was helping others

 

Bill Drees, EdD, NRP
Assistant Professor – Department of Emergency Health Sciences
Quality Assurance Manager- Office of the Medical Director for San Antonio Fire Department

Dr. Drees earned his Doctor of Education from Sam Houston State University in 2006.  He currently serves as the Quality Assurance Manager for the Office of the Medical Director where he is responsible for organizing quality improvement initiatives for the San Antonio Fire Department.  He has a long history of excellence as an educator serving as the Dean for several prehospital and nursing programs. 

 

Jeff Rollman, MPH, LP
Assistant Professor/Clinical – Department of Emergency Health Sciences
Civilian Training Officer – Office of the Medical Director for San Antonio Fire Department

Mr. Rollman is a paramedic, educator, and researcher with nearly 15 years of experience in the EMS field. With a background in health policy and public health, his interests lie at the intersection of prehospital care and public health. Mr. Rollman’s current teaching and research focus areas include mobile integrated health community paramedicine, mental health, EMS safety, and fall prevention.

 

Joi Shumaker, BSN, RN, LP
Assistant Professor/Clinical – Department of Emergency Health Sciences
Regional Infection Control Officer – Office of the Medical Director for San Antonio Fire Department

 

Mrs. Shumaker has been in EMS for 40+ years with her first EMS run occurring in the seventh grade at age 12 when she took care of a critically injured infant with her RN mother when they witnessed the car accident.  She also has over 30 years as a nurse.  Previous EMS experience includes rising to the rank of Captain with the Helotes Fire Department.  Currently, she oversees the Regional Infection Control Officer program providing expert consultation for the San Antonio Fire Department and EMS/Fire agencies across the South Texas area.

 

Alan Lewis RN, LP
Civilian Training Officer – Office of the Medical Director for San Antonio Fire Department

Mr. Lewis currently serves as a Civilian Training Officer for SAFD.  He has over 20 years of experience as a flight nurse taking care of the most critical patients in South Texas on their way to comprehensive care. Current focus areas of quality improvement are narcotic administration and cardiac arrest.

 

Domingo Guerrero, LP, NRP
Instructor/Clinical – Department of Emergency Health Sciences
Civilian Training Officer – Office of the Medical Director for San Antonio Fire Department

Mr. Guerrero currently serves as a Civilian Training Officer for SAFD. He also serves as a Captain with the Kirby Volunteer Fire Department.  He has over 30 years of experience including work as a surgical/anesthesia technologist. He was a member of the surgical team that performed the first heart/lung transplant in San Antonio and was a member of the emergency medical team assigned to care for Pope John Paul II during his visit to San Antonio in 1987. His current focus is in-class lectures and field EMS instruction for the San Antonio Fire Department. He is a graduate of San Antonio College, St. Mary’s University and attended Graduate School at The University of Texas at Austin.

 

Justin Pruitt, EMT-P

Civilian Training Officer – Office of the Medical Director for San Antonio Fire Department

Mr. Pruitt has been a Civilian Training Officer for the San Antonio Fire Department for over ten years. Before that, he had extensive 911 EMS experience working for Schertz EMS as a paramedic.

 

Anthony Sperduti, EMT-P

Civilian Training Officer – Office of the Medical Director for San Antonio Fire Department

Mr. Sperduti currently serves as a Civilian Training Officer with Íø±¬³Ô¹Ï’s Office of the Medical Director for the San Antonio Fire Department. He earned a BS in Biology from UT San Antonio and is a graduate of the Íø±¬³Ô¹Ï Science Center San Antonio Paramedic program. He has served South-Central Texas as a paramedic, in different roles, for more than a decade.

 

Chris Stevens, EMT-P
Instructor/Clinical – Department of Emergency Health Sciences
Civilian Training Officer – Office of the Medical Director for San Antonio Fire Department

Mr. Stevens is a USAF Veteran and Retired New Braunfels Firefighter. He has been an Adjunct Faculty member for 17 years and recently transitioned to the OMD’s office as a CTO. He has been involved with EMS for over 20 years treating and transporting critically ill patients and those that have sustained traumatic injuries. He currently lectures the SAFD EMT-Basic course and credentials active SAFD Paramedics in the field.
