Physical Therapy students hold Senior Health Fair

Seniors living near the District 2 Senior 厙惇勛圖 Center on South W.W. White in San Antonio were treated to health screenings and more April 27 by Department of Physical Therapy III students who will graduate in May.

The annual Health Fair is both a community service and course activity for DPT III students. The Health Fair featured screening for fall risk and cognition, and booths with information about nutrition, home safety, emergency preparedness and other topics. Attendance was larger than in previous years, with 85 seniors participating.

Gardner, Shriver receive 2016 Presidential Awards

Linked by what President William L. Henrich, M.D., MACP, called a common desire for excellence, 20 members of the faculty and staff were honored March 22 with Presidential Awards from the 厙惇勛圖 Science Center San Antonio. Faculty and staff are recognized for excellence in teaching, research, clinic and service. The winners were acknowledged with a congratulatory Senate Proclamation from the State of Texas by state Sen. Jose Menendez of San Antonio as well as a monetary gift.

The School of Health Professions achieved a national ranking of three of its graduate health programs in U.S. News & World Reports Best Grad Schools for 2016.


SHP students raise funds for breast cancer research, education

University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio students raised $750 during the 2nd annual School of Health Professions (SHP) powder puff football game to benefit breast cancer research, educational programs and patient support through Susan G. Komen San Antonio.


Quillin named Educator of the Year by physician assistants academy

Barbara Quillin, M.P.A.S., program director for the Physician Assistant (PA) Studies program in the School of Health Professions, has been named Educator of the Year by the Texas Academy of Physician Assistants. The award was presented at the  TAPA Primary Care Conference at the Westin Galleria Hotel in Houston on Feb. 20.


Faculty member receives national EMS award

Craig Manifold, D.O., clinical assistant professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine, received a major award for his efforts in leading emergency management services nationwide.

Dr. Manifold received the Michael Copass Leadership Award at the Major Metropolitan Medical Directors Gathering of Eagles Conference. He is chair of the National EMS Committee, American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and board member of the National Registry of EMTs (NREMT).

The University of Texas Health Science Center hosted the Texas Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (TAAHP) annual meeting on February 3-6, 2016. During the conference, Health Science Center faculty and students provided updates and insights into academic programs. Advisors also toured the campus, labs and classrooms.


Respiratory Care faculty honored as fellows by national associations

Two faculty members from the Department of Respiratory Care at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio have been recognized for their dedication, leadership and excellence in respiratory therapy by two national associations.

David C. Shelledy, Ph.D., dean of the School of Health Professions, hosted the 2015 Research Retreat for School of Health Professions faculty and staff on December 16 at the Omni San Antonio.

Highlights included talks by Health Science Center leaders on various aspects of research.


PA students provide free vision screenings to community

In collaboration with the Lions Sight Research Foundation, students from the Physician Assistant Studies (PAS) program the 厙惇勛圖 Science Center San Antonio helped provide free vision screenings to those in medically underserved communities.


OT faculty recognized by Texas Occupational Therapy Association

Four faculty members from the Department of Occupational Therapy at the 厙惇勛圖 Science Center San Antonio were recognized for their dedication to teaching, clinical practice, patient advocacy and community service by the Texas Occupation Therapy Association (TOTA).  Faculty members received their awards during the TOTA Mountain Central Conference on November 6-8, 2015 in Richardson, Texas.

PA program graduates earn 100 percent pass rate on national exam

Graduates of the Physician Assistant (PA) Studies program at the 厙惇勛圖 Science Center at San Antonio School of Health Professions have earned 100 percent first-time pass rate on the National Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam (PANCE) administered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
