Applicants to the new have until May 1 to apply for the Summer 2022 session.

EMTs are trained to provide emergency medical care to the critically ill and injured and to work in the EMS system, but some students complete the program to gain immediate, relevant health care experience, said Lance Villers, PhD, associate professor and chair of the Department of Emergency Health Sciences in the School of Health Professions.

“The EMT certification is considered the foundational level in EMS care and is a prerequisite to become a paramedic,” Dr. Villers said. “Our program has included a wide range of students, including fire fighters, medical first-responders, law enforcement, as well has pre-medical students interested in health care and practicing physicians interested in out-of-hospital emergency care and community service.”

The program includes classroom instruction of Basic Life Support knowledge and skills, and clinical and field internships. The curriculum prepares students to take the National Registry of EMT certification examination.

No prior health care experience or college prerequisites are required for the EMT-Basic program. Applicants interested in becoming paramedics who successfully complete the EMT program this summer will be eligible to continue into the paramedic program in the fall.

All students admitted to the Summer 2022 EMT-Basic certification program will be eligible for a scholarship covering tuition and fees.
