will receive a 2025 Presidential Excellence Award for Teaching Excellence–Emerging.

“The recognition of the work that I do put into teaching is quite an honor because it is the common theme to pretty much of all my activities,” Eaton said. “Students are involved; we’re figuring out a way for the next generation to do better patient-centered care.”

Eaton and her fellow faculty in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders are seeing the success of the Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology program’s structure, which builds on a foundation in the classroom to applied content and rich hands-on experiences.

“We’ve been very intentional about that progression,” she said. “We’ve seen it pay off in terms of the comments we get from external supervisers in the fall where our students are just better prepared. We know what we are doing is working.”

Eaton, who teaches Neurological Bases of Speech, Hearing and Language;  Aphasia and Related Disorders; and Clinical Methods II (Intervention), credits her network of support for the award.

“I’ve had incredible support from my colleagues and the department, from mentors and the support of students, too,” she said. “It’s not just my award.”

Eaton leads the San Antonio Network for Aphasia (SANA), a community support group for people with aphasia and their caregivers, and the Summer Aphasia Program at the School of Health Professions. The programs train graduate students to work with adults with communication disorders, including post-stroke aphasia and primary progressive aphasia.

The 2025 Presidential Excellence Award recipients will honored with a plaque and cash award during an event in April. A complete list recipients can be found .
