School-based prevention rotation to distribute over 400 electric toothbrushes to Roy Cisneros Elementary students
Nearly four hundred and fifty students at Roy Cisneros Elementary School, part of the Edgewood Independent School District, will be able to take home electronic powered toothbrushes thanks to a donation by Proctor and Gamble, facilitated by Juanita Lozano-Pineda, DDS, MPH, associate dean of external affairs, and Nora Olivo, academic programs coordinator for the Hispanic Center of Excellence. SADHA members create short video documenting changes to their program post-COVID-19
Members of the Student American Dental Hygienists’ Association (SADHA) answered a challenge by the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) to submit a short video showcasing how students are overcoming academic and clinical challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. Senior dental hygiene student, Leslie Sanchez, serves as the students’ video committee lead and felt it was essential to have fun with the project despite the serious subject matter. “We wanted to give outsiders a glimpse of the adjustments the dental hygiene program has made in the midst of a pandemic,” Leslie said.
DS3 takes first place at OPEN’s 2020 scientific poster competition
Jessica De La Fuente, DS3, was awarded first place in the scientific poster competition at The Oral Health Progress and Equity Network’s (OPEN) virtual 2020 meeting. Her comparative study, “Determinants of Oral Health: Dental Products Availability by Geographic Areas”, investigated the availability of dental products and access to care in different zip codes throughout San Antonio.

The School of Dentistry is currently accepting nominations for the 2021 Faculty Research and Master Clinician Awards to recognize outstanding faculty performance in both categories. The Faculty Research Award is aimed at acknowledging the outstanding, lifetime scientific achievements made by a dental faculty member, while the Master Clinician Award will honor a full-time dental faculty member who provides direct patient care activities.

The School of Dentistry welcomes back to campus Tiffany Tavares, DDS, DMSc, a new clinical assistant professor in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry’s Oral Medicine Clinic. Dr. Tavares earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the Universidade Federal Fluminense in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and her Doctor of Medical Sciences degree from Harvard School of Dental Medicine. She also completed an oral medicine residency at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a teaching hospital affiliated with the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, in 2018. Dr.

Meet the Faculty: Dr. Charles 'Chuck' Powell
On September 1, 2020, the Department of Periodontics welcomed Charles A. Powell, DDS, MS back to campus as a member of its faculty. Born and raised in Dallas, Dr. Powell earned his DDS from the Թ Science Center at Houston and, while receiving his periodontics training at Lackland Air Force Base, he earned his MS in periodontics right here at Թ. A six-week course focused on periodontics is what first attracted him to the specialty. “In many ways it was a brief residency where I discovered many new therapies such as regenerative therapy and dental implants,” Dr.
Senior dental student honored with the Dorothy R. and Vick F. Williams Endowment scholarship
At the end of August, the Թ School of Dentistry awarded over $250,000 in scholarships to support sixty-eight dental and dental hygiene students with their tuition and other education-related expenses. Funding for scholarships comes to the school courtesy of gracious donors and professional associations invested in supporting students who are in pursuit of their Doctor of Dental Science degree or their Bachelor’s in Dental Hygiene degree. Remembering Dr. John Littlefield
On Sunday, September 6, 2020, a colleague and dear friend of the School of Dentistry, John H. Littlefield, PhD, passed away peacefully with his wife, Dr. Benda Talley Littlefield, by his side. A valued education consultant for over 40 years, Dr. Littlefield joined the Թ in 1976. He served the institution as director of the division of Educational Research and Development, as well as director for the Academic Center for Excellence in Teaching.
Noemi C. Gonzales retires after 37 years of service
After serving the Թ School of Dentistry for 37 years, Noemi C. Gonzales, RDA, hung up her lanyard and retired on Monday, August 31, 2020. Noemi first arrived on campus August 18, 1983 to work as a dental assistant in the senior student clinic, which she did for two years. She moved on to work in what was known as the Simulated Private Practice (SPP) clinic, the site for a three-week senior student rotation meant to simulate the flow of a private practice office. She worked in the SPP for fifteen years under the leadership of Beatrice R.
Meet the Faculty: Dr. Andrea Bordoy
Since 2018, Andrea Bordoy, DDS, has acquainted herself rather well with the Թ School of Dentistry as she completed both an observership and an internship within the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Effective September 1, 2020, Dr. Bordoy steps into a new role and joins the department’s faculty as an assistant professor. Dr. Bordoy grew up in Venezuela’s capital city of Caracas and earned her dental degree in 2009 at Santa María University.
BDA survey recognizes Dr. Hargreaves’ role in most influential endodontics textbook of the past century
The British Dental Association (BDA) has shared the results of a survey its members participated in to select the most influential dental textbooks from the past 100 years. Among the 8 categories evaluated, “Cohen’s Pathways of the Pulp” won the endodontics category with a substantial 77.8% vote. Originally published in 1976, the 12th edition of the text has been edited by Kenneth M. Hargreaves, DDS, PhD, professor and chair of the department of endodontics at the Թ School of Dentistry, and Louis H. Berman, DDS, FACD.
2020 Predoctoral Convocation Awards
The Թ School of Dentistry recognized the accomplishments from predoctoral dental students during the 2019-2020 academic year by hosting a virtual ceremony on Friday, August 14, 2020. Meet the Faculty: Dr. Lea El Hachem
The School of Dentistry would like to welcome Lea El Hachem, DDS, CAGS, MSd, a newly appointed faculty member in the department of periodontics. Dr. Hachem, as she prefers to be called, earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at the Université Saint-Joseph in Beirut, Lebanon and completed a post-doctoral program in periodontics at Boston University, earning her Master of Science in Oral Biology and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Periodontics. HRSA renews grant at $3.25M to assist disadvantaged and minority dental students
The Թ School of Dentistry received notification from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) that the Scholarship for Disadvantaged Students (SDS) has been successfully renewed at $3.25 million. Over the next five years, the SDS program will award $32,500 to 20 dental students annually.
