Jon M. Dossett, DMD, FACD, FICD, MAGD, ABGD, assistant professor in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry, was presented with the 2023 Texas Dentist of the Year award.

Every year, the Texas Academy of General Dentistry (Texas AGD) selects one dentist to honor as the Texas Dentist of the Year, the highest honor a Texas dentist can receive. This year, 14 nominees were chosen throughout the state from local societies and 10 active components of the Texas Dental Association and Texas AGD.

Dossett was nominated by the San Antonio Academy of General Dentistry. The winner was determined based on contributions to dentistry, service to the community, dedication to principles of continuing education, and other activities that indicate character and excellence.

“We are so honored to have faculty such as Dr. Dossett serve in our program.  He provides such a rich learning opportunity for our aspiring doctors.  He facilitates an outstanding [Advanced Education in General Dentistry] student organization that just creates a mindset of ‘life-long learning.’ We want to congratulate and thank him for this achievement of Texas Dentist of the Year,” said Scott G. Stafford, DDS, MBA, interim chair for the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry and director of the continuing dental education program.

Upon his announcement as the winner, Dossett said, “It is an absolute honor to be receiving this prestigious award and to have been nominated with 13 of my esteemed colleagues who represent excellence within the dental profession. I try to instill in the students and residents that I teach to laugh a little, learn a little and live a little as they grow in their personal and professional lives. I’ve been the benefactor of great mentorship during my 36-[year] career, and I can only hope that my mentorship to others will inspire them to excel and to better serve the patients entrusted to their care. Having had the honor of 30 [years] of military service to this country, I salute each of you with a humble thank you!”

Dossett received his Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry degree from the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry in 1987 and served 30 years as a practicing dentist in the US. Air Force. In 2003, he pursued and earned the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) Mastership Award. Having previously served as the president of the San Antonio Academy of General Dentistry, Dossett earned recognition as the 2023 AGD Faculty of the Year. Additionally, he holds membership in both the San Antonio District Dental Society and the Federal Services American Dental Association.

Dossett is also a board member of Texas AGD, vice-chair of Texas AGD’s Education Committee, and previous service in the Colorado AGD and Colorado Dental Association. He has experience and service to multiple national and international dental organizations, including the American Board of General Dentistry, the American Dental Educators Association, and the Academy of Operative Dentistry. For more than three decades, Dossett has served as an invited speaker and featured presenter for Federal Services and private sector groups and has contributed to over 1,800 hours of continuing education.
