Jesus Trevino, DDS, is a distinguished alumnus of the Íø±¬³Ô¹Ï School of Dentistry’s class of 1999. Through his commitment to community care, he has made significant contributions to pediatric dental care within the Rio Grande Valley. With over two decades of dedicated service, Trevino's journey from a young patient inspired by his local dentist to a respected practice owner is a testament to his commitment to both his craft and his community.

As a valued alumnus and donor, he credits his motivation to give back to his belief in the excellent education he received, which he said contributed to his successful practice.

Roots and practice

Hailing from Harlingen, Texas, Trevino currently owns and operates his dental practice, Dr. Tory Pediatric Dentistry, in Pharr, Texas. His journey into the field of dentistry began in childhood when he received orthodontic care from Juan Villarreal, DDS, a local dentist whose influence left a lasting impression on him. This early inspiration paved the way for Trevino’s pursuit of dentistry. During his time in college at The University of Texas at Austin, Trevino would return home on summer breaks and shadow Villarreal doing general dentistry, pediatric dentistry and orthodontics.

These experiences ultimately led him to pursue professional training at The at San Antonio, a choice motivated by the institution's reputation and the shared legacy among his mentor, Villarreal, and the other dentists in the practice.

A passion for pediatric dentistry

After completing dental school, Trevino undertook a residency at Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans' Hospital, where he spent a month immersed in pediatric dentistry. It was during this time that he discovered his passion for specializing in caring for children. Upon finishing his residency, he became the first pediatric dentist hired by Villarreal's practice, allowing Trevino to return to his community and the practice that had significantly contributed to his journey to become a dentist.

Educating his patients and their families on the importance of dental health and care is the top priority for his practice. Trevino believes that each child is unique and that the challenge of addressing individual needs is what makes pediatric dentistry interesting and fun. He takes immense pride in witnessing his patients develop healthy dental habits for life, guiding them from childhood into adulthood when they graduate from his practice to general dentistry care.

Advice for the next generation

Trevino always envisioned returning to the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) to practice because pediatric dentists were in short supply in the area. He advises current dental students and recent graduates to thoroughly research the communities they wish to serve. By returning to the RGV, he not only fulfilled a critical community need but also established a loyal patient base and successful practice.

Looking ahead

As Trevino reflects on his career, his most significant achievement remains the establishment of his practice in 2003. He envisions a future where he can pass on his legacy, ideally transferring his practice to his children or a family member when it’s time for him to retire.

Outside of his professional life, Trevino enjoys spending quality time with his family, friends and pets. This balance of work and personal life is essential for maintaining his passion for dentistry and community service.

Jesus Trevino exemplifies the spirit of Íø±¬³Ô¹Ï’s commitment to service and community. His journey from a local patient to a respected practitioner in the Rio Grande Valley is an inspiration!
